Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-arginine, a semi-essential amino acid your body uses in protein synthesis, immune function, and nitric oxide production (a compound that helps blood vessels relax). The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — gelatin, vegetable stearate, magnesium silicate, and microcrystalline cellulose — that serve as the capsule shell and binding agents.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We don't hold effectiveness data for L-arginine in our records. The safety notes indicate there isn't enough reliable information to establish how well it works for self-treatment, so it's best to avoid it unless your doctor advises otherwise and provides personalized guidance on whether it may help your specific situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-arginine is generally well tolerated for short-term use orally, but it can lower blood pressure and isn't safe for everyone — use only under medical supervision, since safety for self-treatment isn't well established. The most common side effects from oral doses are abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, diarrhea, headache, insomnia, and flushing.
A small number of people have reported weakness (asthenia) with oral L-arginine. If you have asthma, note that inhaled L-arginine can trigger airway inflammation, though two studies of oral L-arginine in asthma patients found no airway problems.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking L-arginine, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood pressure medications (including ACE inhibitors and ARBs), blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), diabetes medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, or heart/erectile dysfunction drugs like isoproterenol or sildenafil. All of these carry Moderate-severity interaction potential.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-arginine is generally well tolerated short-term by mouth, but it lowers blood pressure and interacts with blood pressure medications, blood thinners, diabetes drugs, and potassium-raising medications. It's not intended for self-treatment without medical oversight.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it, especially if you're on any blood pressure, heart, diabetes, or blood-thinning medication.

L-Arginine 500 mg by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Arginine 500 mg from Douglas Laboratories interacts with several medication types, all at Moderate severity.
The main concern is blood pressure — L-arginine increases a compound called nitric oxide that relaxes blood vessels, so combining it with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives, ACE inhibitors, or ARBs) could lower your pressure too much. It may also raise potassium levels when paired with potassium-sparing diuretics or ACE inhibitors and ARBs, which also raise potassium.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-arginine also affects blood thinners (anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs) theoretically by enhancing their effect, raising bleeding risk, though the clinical importance isn't yet clear. Diabetes medications could have additive blood-sugar-lowering effects when combined with L-arginine.
Lastly, certain heart and erectile dysfunction medications — isoproterenol and sildenafil (Viagra) — may cause excessive blood vessel relaxation and low blood pressure if taken together with this supplement.
Additionally, our data holds no information on interactions with other medication types you might be taking. Altogether, these interactions span 403 individual medications.

L-Arginine
Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine and ACE inhibitors may increase the risk for hypotension and hyperkalemia.
Combining L-arginine with some antihypertensive drugs, especially ACE inhibitors, seems to have additive vasodilating and blood pressure-lowering effects. Furthermore, ACE inhibitors can increase potassium levels. Use of L-arginine has been associated with hyperkalemia in some patients. Theoretically, concomitant use of ACE inhibitors with L-arginine may increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (Arbs)
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine and ARBs may increase the risk of hypotension and hyperkalemia.
L-arginine increases nitric oxide, which causes vasodilation. Combining L-arginine with ARBs seems to increase L-arginine-induced vasodilation. Furthermore, ARBs can increase potassium levels. Use of L-arginine has been associated with hyperkalemia in some patients. Theoretically, concomitant use of ARBs with L-arginine may increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding.
Preliminary research suggests that L-arginine infusions reduce platelet aggregation in humans. The clinical significance of this effect is unclear.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Preliminary clinical research shows that L-arginine decreases blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine and antihypertensive drugs may increase the risk of hypotension.
L-arginine increases nitric oxide, which causes vasodilation. Clinical evidence shows that L-arginine can reduce blood pressure in some individuals with hypertension. Furthermore, combining L-arginine with some antihypertensive drugs seems to have additive vasodilating and blood pressure-lowering effects.
Isoproterenol (Isuprel)
Theoretically, concurrent use of isoproterenol and L-arginine might result in additive effects and hypotension.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that L-arginine enhances isoproterenol-induced vasodilation in patients with essential hypertension or a family history of essential hypertension.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically concomitant use of potassium-sparing diuretics with L-arginine may increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Potassium-sparing diuretics can increase potassium levels. Use of L-arginine has been associated with hyperkalemia in some patients.
Sildenafil (Viagra)
Theoretically, concurrent use of sildenafil and L-arginine might increase the risk for hypotension.
In vivo, concurrent use of L-arginine and sildenafil has resulted in increased vasodilation. Theoretically, concurrent use might have additive vasodilatory and hypotensive effects. However, in studies evaluating the combined use of L-arginine and sildenafil for erectile dysfunction, hypotension was not reported.
Testosterone
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine and testosterone might have additive effects.
In clinical research, L-arginine increases the level of testosterone in male patients with erectile dysfunction. The clinical significance of this finding is unclear.
