Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: L-arginine and L-ornithine, both amino acids (building blocks your body uses to make proteins). L-arginine plays a role in blood vessel function and immune response, while L-ornithine is involved in the urea cycle and protein metabolism.
The tablet also contains cellulose and dicalcium phosphate as inactive ingredients (fillers and binders that hold the pill together).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
We don't hold effectiveness data for L-arginine in the facts on file. L-Ornithine shows possibly effective evidence for athletic performance, but the evidence is insufficient to rate it for dry skin, insomnia, or periodontitis (gum disease).
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-arginine is generally well tolerated in the short term, but it can lower blood pressure and is not safe for everyone—it should only be used under medical supervision, since safety for self-treatment isn't well established. Common side effects from taking it by mouth include abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, diarrhea, headache, insomnia, and flushing.
When inhaled, L-arginine can inflame airways, though two oral studies in asthma patients found no airway problems. L-Ornithine is generally well tolerated in the short term, but long-term safety hasn't been well studied.
Pregnancy and lactation safety data for L-Ornithine aren't on file—there isn't enough information to know either way. L-Arginine is rated possibly safe in pregnancy but has no lactation data on file.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or sildenafil—L-arginine can cause unsafe blood pressure drops. Also flag blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), potassium-sparing diuretics, diabetes medications, or isoproterenol.
Use the search tool below to verify your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is worth considering if you're an athlete looking for a supplement and you don't take blood pressure drugs, blood thinners, diabetes medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, or sildenafil. If you take any prescription medication—especially for heart, blood pressure, or blood clotting—talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this in.
They can check your exact medications against the full interaction list and help you decide if it's right for you.

L-Arginine L-Ornithine 2500 by GNC Pro Performance Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GNC Pro Performance L-Arginine L-Ornithine 2500 has documented interactions through its L-arginine content.
The most serious concern is a moderate-severity risk of low blood pressure (hypotension) when combined with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and sildenafil (Viagra)—L-arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, and stacking that effect with these drugs can drop your pressure too far.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-arginine also carries moderate-severity risks with blood thinners (anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs), which may increase bleeding risk; potassium-sparing water pills, which can raise potassium to unsafe levels; diabetes medications, which may lower blood sugar too much; and isoproterenol, a heart medication that can cause excessive blood pressure drop.
L-Ornithine, the second ingredient, has no interactions documented in our data. Altogether, these interactions span 403 individual medications.
Use the medication checker below to see if any of your prescriptions are on that list before you start this product.

For each ingredient in L-Arginine L-Ornithine 2500 with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Arginine
Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine and ACE inhibitors may increase the risk for hypotension and hyperkalemia.
Combining L-arginine with some antihypertensive drugs, especially ACE inhibitors, seems to have additive vasodilating and blood pressure-lowering effects. Furthermore, ACE inhibitors can increase potassium levels. Use of L-arginine has been associated with hyperkalemia in some patients. Theoretically, concomitant use of ACE inhibitors with L-arginine may increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (Arbs)
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine and ARBs may increase the risk of hypotension and hyperkalemia.
L-arginine increases nitric oxide, which causes vasodilation. Combining L-arginine with ARBs seems to increase L-arginine-induced vasodilation. Furthermore, ARBs can increase potassium levels. Use of L-arginine has been associated with hyperkalemia in some patients. Theoretically, concomitant use of ARBs with L-arginine may increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding.
Preliminary research suggests that L-arginine infusions reduce platelet aggregation in humans. The clinical significance of this effect is unclear.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Preliminary clinical research shows that L-arginine decreases blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine and antihypertensive drugs may increase the risk of hypotension.
L-arginine increases nitric oxide, which causes vasodilation. Clinical evidence shows that L-arginine can reduce blood pressure in some individuals with hypertension. Furthermore, combining L-arginine with some antihypertensive drugs seems to have additive vasodilating and blood pressure-lowering effects.
Isoproterenol (Isuprel)
Theoretically, concurrent use of isoproterenol and L-arginine might result in additive effects and hypotension.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that L-arginine enhances isoproterenol-induced vasodilation in patients with essential hypertension or a family history of essential hypertension.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically concomitant use of potassium-sparing diuretics with L-arginine may increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
Potassium-sparing diuretics can increase potassium levels. Use of L-arginine has been associated with hyperkalemia in some patients.
Sildenafil (Viagra)
Theoretically, concurrent use of sildenafil and L-arginine might increase the risk for hypotension.
In vivo, concurrent use of L-arginine and sildenafil has resulted in increased vasodilation. Theoretically, concurrent use might have additive vasodilatory and hypotensive effects. However, in studies evaluating the combined use of L-arginine and sildenafil for erectile dysfunction, hypotension was not reported.
Testosterone
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine and testosterone might have additive effects.
In clinical research, L-arginine increases the level of testosterone in male patients with erectile dysfunction. The clinical significance of this finding is unclear.
