What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 1 active ingredient: L-lysine hydrochloride at 500 mg per capsule. L-lysine is an amino acid your body uses for various functions, including immune support and wound healing.
The capsule also contains several inactive ingredients—hypromellose, stearic acid, microcrystalline cellulose, and rice flour—which help form and stabilize the supplement.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-lysine is possibly effective for herpes labialis, commonly known as cold sores. The evidence we hold is limited, so talk with your doctor about whether it's a good fit for you.
For other uses—child growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers—the evidence is insufficient to rate its effectiveness.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. High amounts may cause stomach upset, and long-term safety hasn't been extensively studied.
Common side effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dyspepsia (indigestion). There is one case report of oral lysine linked to kidney inflammation that progressed to chronic kidney failure, though this is rare.
Because supplement safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding isn't well studied, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it during these times.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take a 5-HT4 agonist medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement—lysine may reduce its effectiveness. For all other medications, no interactions are documented in our data for the ingredient we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
L-lysine is a reasonable choice if you're looking for possibly effective support for cold sores and you don't take a 5-HT4 agonist. If you do take one of those medications, or you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Most people tolerate it well, but stomach upset can happen at higher doses.

Formula
Lysine is an essential amino acid that must be obtained through the diet or through supplementation. Lysine is necessary for the production of all proteins in the body, and is required for the maintenance of the structural proteins collagen and elastin, which form all connective tissue such as skin, tendon, and bone. Lysine is also a precursor to carnitine, which is needed for fat metabolism and energy production. In addition, lysine may help to support a healthy immune system and proper cardiovascular function.
