What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: chromium, supplied as chromium picolinate at 200 micrograms per capsule. Chromium is a mineral that plays a role in how your body handles blood sugar.
The capsule also contains rice flour and hypromellose (a plant-derived capsule material) as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is likely effective for chromium deficiency—the condition it prevents when intake is genuinely low. For blood sugar control, the evidence is more limited: it's rated possibly effective for type 2 diabetes, but possibly ineffective for prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), high blood pressure, and schizophrenia.
If you're considering it for blood sugar, talk with your doctor about whether it makes sense for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium at typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated. Most common side effects are mild: gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects—kidney or liver damage, a muscle breakdown condition (rhabdomyolysis), or low blood platelets (thrombocytopenia)—have been reported, mostly at higher doses or with longer use. Skin rashes and contact dermatitis can occur, especially in people with a known chromium allergy.
The safety data on high or long-term supplement doses is limited, so unless your doctor recommends extra chromium, stick to food sources or a prenatal vitamin if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check your blood sugar medications (antidiabetes drugs and insulin), levothyroxine (thyroid hormone), NSAIDs, and aspirin with your pharmacist. Chromium has Moderate interactions with the first three and Minor interactions with the last two.
No interactions are documented for other ingredient we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chromium picolinate is a single-ingredient supplement most useful if you actually have a chromium deficiency. If you take blood sugar medications, insulin, levothyroxine, or NSAIDs, you need to check this product against your exact medications before starting—the interactions are real.

Formula
Chromium is an essential trace mineral that is best known for its role as an insulin co-factor. Chromium is therefore critical for the maintenance of healthy glucose and carbohydrate metabolism; however, it is also important for the utilization of fat and protein. Scientific studies also indicate that it may play a role in cardiovascular health. As part of a healthy diet and exercise program, chromium picolinate may help to maintain healthy blood sugar levels already within the normal range and may also help to support a healthy body composition.

For each ingredient in Chromium Picolinate 200 mcg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
