What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-tyrosine, an amino acid your body uses to make neurotransmitters and thyroid hormones. The inactive ingredients are cellulose, povidone, and food glaze.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-tyrosine is effective for phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic condition that affects how your body processes amino acids. It's possibly effective for cognitive function and memory.
For athletic performance, the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective. For alcohol use disorder and dementia, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tyrosine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, though no comprehensive safety evaluation has been done. The most common side effects at standard doses are fatigue, headache, heartburn, and nausea.
At very high doses (150 mg/kg or more), headache and fatigue become more likely; taking it with other supplements like 5-hydroxytryptophan or medications like carbidopa may cause drowsiness, agitation, diarrhea, or vomiting—effects that often improve if the dose is lowered. There isn't enough safety data on L-tyrosine during pregnancy, and safety data for breastfeeding is limited; talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take levodopa (Parkinson's medication) or any thyroid hormone medication. Both are Moderate-severity interactions—levodopa's effectiveness may drop, and thyroid hormones may build up to higher levels.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-tyrosine may help with memory and thinking in some people and is proven effective for PKU. If you take levodopa or thyroid medications, check with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting—the timing and dose matter.
It's generally well tolerated but can cause mild side effects like headache or nausea at higher doses.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Tyrosine 1000 mg by GNC interacts with levodopa and thyroid hormone medications.
The most serious concern is levodopa, where tyrosine may reduce how well the drug works by competing with it during absorption in your intestines. If you take levodopa for Parkinson's disease, separate your tyrosine dose from levodopa by at least 2 hours.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Thyroid hormone medications (Moderate severity) may have additive effects when combined with tyrosine, since tyrosine is a building block your body uses to make thyroid hormones. Taking both together could theoretically raise your thyroid hormone levels higher than intended.
