HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Tyrosine 500 mg by Thompson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-tyrosine, an amino acid your body uses to make neurotransmitters and thyroid hormones. The capsule also holds three inactive ingredients—gelatin, cellulose, and magnesium stearate—which help form and stabilize the capsule.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-tyrosine has been rated effective for phenylketonuria (PKU), a metabolic condition. It's possibly effective for cognitive function and memory.
However, the evidence isn't strong enough to support its use for athletic performance, and there isn't enough reliable data yet to rate it for alcohol use disorder or dementia.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tyrosine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but talk to your healthcare provider before using it regularly. The most common side effects in trial settings were fatigue, headache, heartburn, and nausea.
Larger doses (150 mg/kg, or roughly 10–11 grams for an average adult) are more likely to cause headache and fatigue. There isn't enough safety data in pregnancy, so avoid supplemental doses unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Breastfeeding safety data is also limited—talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before taking this if you use levodopa (a Parkinson's medication)—separate the doses by at least 2 hours to protect levodopa's effectiveness. Also double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any thyroid hormone medications, since tyrosine may increase their effects in your body.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-tyrosine may help with cognitive function and memory, though the evidence is modest. If you take levodopa for Parkinson's or any thyroid hormone medication, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—the timing and combination matter.
For most other people, it's generally well tolerated, but regular use is best discussed with your healthcare provider first.

L-Tyrosine 500 mg by Thompson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Thompson's L-Tyrosine 500 mg can interact with two important medication types.
The most serious concern is with levodopa (Parkinson's medication): tyrosine and levodopa compete for absorption in your small intestine, which could reduce how well levodopa works. If you take levodopa, separate your tyrosine dose from it by at least 2 hours.
Tyrosine may also have additive effects with thyroid hormone medications, potentially increasing thyroid hormone levels in your body.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Because tyrosine is a building block for thyroid hormones, combining it with prescription thyroid medications needs discussion with your doctor beforehand. Altogether, these interactions span 21 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to see whether any of your prescriptions fall into either category before starting.
