Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dried lemon balm herb extract in a base of vegetable glycerin and distilled water. Lemon balm is a mint-family herb traditionally used for relaxation and stress relief.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence on lemon balm supports possibly effective use for cold sores (herpes labialis), stress, and depression. That means there's some human trial data backing these uses, but the evidence isn't yet conclusive.
The strength of what we know is the same across all three.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though high doses and long-term safety haven't been thoroughly studied. In trials, dizziness and sedation were reported but didn't occur more often than with placebo, and using it with alcohol didn't affect reaction time or thinking.
One rare case of heart rhythm changes and QT prolongation was reported in someone taking a multi-ingredient workout product containing lemon balm, but it's unclear whether lemon balm alone caused it; symptoms reversed within hours to weeks after stopping. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise.
While breastfeeding, safety information is limited, so talk with your doctor before use.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check it with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on CNS depressants—sedatives, sleep aids, some pain relievers, or other drugs that make you drowsy—or if you take thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Both are Moderate-severity interactions documented for lemon balm.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lemon Balm Glycerite may help with cold sores, stress, and low mood based on possibly effective evidence, but it does interact with CNS depressants and thyroid medication. If you take sedating drugs or thyroid replacement, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
For pregnancy or breastfeeding, the same conversation is important.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Lemon Balm Glycerite by Herbalist & Alchemist contains one active ingredient—dried lemon balm herb extract—that does interact with medications.
The most serious documented interactions are Moderate in severity and involve CNS depressants (drugs that slow brain activity, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some pain relievers) and thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
With CNS depressants, lemon balm may add to their drowsy or sedating effects. The concern is theoretical but based on animal and human evidence that lemon balm itself has CNS depressant activity.
With thyroid hormone replacement, lemon balm constituents may interfere with how your body uses the medication by binding to thyroid-stimulating hormone in the lab and reducing thyroid activity in animal studies.
Altogether, these interactions span 264 individual medications. Before you start this product, check your exact prescriptions—especially any sedating drugs or thyroid medication—using the interaction checker below, and run the results by your doctor or pharmacist.

dried Lemon Balm herb extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
