HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lignan Flax Oil by Barlean's
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Barlean's Lignan Flax Oil has 5 active ingredients: omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids, plus linoleic acid and oleic acid. These are all fats that your body uses for energy and cell structure.
The product comes as a liquid made from organic flaxseed oil and flaxseed particulate (the solid part of the seed).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Oleic acid—one of the fats in this product—is rated possibly effective for lowering cholesterol and supporting heart health. The evidence isn't strong enough to say it works for sure, but early research points in that direction.
We don't have effectiveness ratings on file for the other ingredients in this blend.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Oleic acid is generally recognized as safe when you get it from foods like olive oil in normal amounts. However, concentrated supplements of oleic acid haven't been well studied, especially in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
The product carries no reported adverse effects in our data, but if you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting—the safety data just isn't there yet.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (medication for type 2 diabetes or high blood sugar), check them here before starting—oleic acid in this product may increase their effect and lower your blood sugar more than intended.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
This is a straightforward flax oil product that may help with cholesterol and heart health. If you take diabetes medication, check your specific drugs with the tool on this page before you start, since oleic acid may boost how well those drugs work.
Anyone pregnant, nursing, or on blood sugar medication should run it by their pharmacist first.

Lignan Flax Oil by Barlean's Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Barlean's Lignan Flax Oil contains oleic acid, which has documented interactions with one class of medication.
Oleic acid may increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs (medications that lower blood sugar). Early research in people with type 2 diabetes suggests that a diet rich in oleic acid can lower fasting blood glucose more than a diet rich in linoleic acid, so there's a theoretical risk that taking this supplement alongside your diabetes medication could amplify the drug's effect.

For each ingredient in Lignan Flax Oil with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Although some clinical evidence suggests that DHA might reduce collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation and thromboxane release, most clinical evidence suggests that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting. However, theoretically, when given in combination with EPA as fish oil, concomitant use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (including aspirin) might increase risk of bleeding.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antidiabetes drugs might reduce the effects of these medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking oral hypoglycemic medications, DHA seems to increase fasting blood glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.
Oleic Acid
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, oleic acid might increase the effects of antidiabetes drugs. Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes taking oral hypoglycemic drugs shows that eating a diet rich in oleic acid from olive oil decreases fasting blood glucose levels when compared to eating a diet rich in linoleic acid from sunflower oil. It is unknown if taking oleic acid supplements would have this effect or if this change is clinically significant. Until more is known, use caution. Dose adjustment may be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
