Vitamin B12 is effective for treating B12 deficiency and a rare condition called Imerslund-Grasbeck disease, and it's likely effective for cyanide poisoning. Vitamin B12 is generally very safe — your body excretes excess B12 in urine, so there's no established upper limit. It's needed in pregnancy and breastfeeding and is considered safe at recommended doses; follow your provider's guidance.

The main side effects are rare: injection-site reactions if given by shot, and very occasionally allergic reactions like rash or itching (especially in people with cobalt or egg allergies).
