Litchi Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Hawaii Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Litchi against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Hawaii Pharm's Litchi is a single-ingredient liquid extract from lychee. It's preserved with vegetable palm glycerin and alcohol.
The product contains one active ingredient.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
We don't have effectiveness ratings for lychee extract in our data, so we can't tell you whether it's been shown to work for any particular purpose.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lychee fruit eaten as food in normal amounts is generally well tolerated, but concentrated extracts like this one aren't well studied. The fruit itself can trigger allergic reactions — hives, skin rashes, swelling of the tongue and lips, shortness of breath, or in rare cases anaphylaxis.
Lychee has been linked to a serious condition called hypoglycemic encephalopathy (brain swelling from very low blood sugar) in malnourished children, especially in India, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. We don't have enough safety data on concentrated extracts during breastfeeding, so talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you take antidiabetes drugs (blood sugar medications) — lychee may increase your risk of low blood sugar. Also flag it if you're on immunosuppressants, since lychee may reduce how well they work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This extract may be a concern if you take blood sugar medication or an immunosuppressant — check with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting it. Allergic reactions are possible, and concentrated lychee extracts aren't as well studied as the whole fruit.
If you're pregnant, nursing, or have any questions about whether it's right for you, your healthcare provider is the best person to ask.

Litchi by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hawaii Pharm's Litchi extract does interact with medications through its active ingredient.
The most serious concern is with antidiabetes drugs (blood sugar medications): lychee seed theoretically increases your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with them, and animal research supports this effect. Additionally, lychee may reduce how well immunosuppressant drugs work, though this has only been shown in lab studies so far, not in people.

Altogether, these interactions span 207 individual medications.
Before you take this product, run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page — especially if you take any blood sugar medication or an immunosuppressant.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, lychee seed might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that an aqueous extract of lychee seed reduces fasting and 2-hour postprandial blood glucose and improves impaired glucose tolerance in rats with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, retrospective research in children has found an association between lychee consumption and increased odds of acute hypoglycemic encephalopathy.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, lychee might reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressant drugs.
In vitro, flavonoids extracted from lychee show immunostimulant effects. So far, this effect has not been reported in humans.
