Lotus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lotus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lotus by Herbal Terra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Lotus by Herbal Terra contains one active ingredient: a liquid extract of the dried plumule (the tiny sprout at the seed's center) from the lotus plant (Nelumbo nucifera). The product also includes menstruum, which is an inactive ingredient used as a solvent to create the liquid form.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for lotus isn't established for the conditions listed in our data — nausea and vomiting, sore throat (pharyngitis), insomnia, weight loss (obesity), heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), and bleeding. Each has insufficient reliable evidence to rate, meaning we don't have enough quality research to say whether it works or doesn't.
If you're considering lotus for any of these, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the available science supports its use for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lotus is common in food, but safety data for medicinal amounts in supplement form is limited in humans. The safety data advises against using concentrated lotus supplements, and there isn't enough information to say it's safe while breastfeeding — so avoid supplement use in that case.
Allergic reactions are possible: orally or on the skin, lotus can trigger hives (urticaria) and contact dermatitis (a localized rash where it touches skin), as documented in case reports. If you're allergic to lotus or have a history of skin sensitivity to plants, this product is not for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin, clopidogrel, or warfarin), diabetes medications (like metformin, insulin, or sulfonylureas), or the sedative pentobarbital (Nembutal). All three categories have Moderate interactions documented with lotus.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lotus may be worth a conversation if you're interested in traditional or herbal approaches, but the evidence for what it actually does isn't solid yet. The bigger question is whether it interacts safely with blood thinners, diabetes drugs, or sedatives — if you take any of those, you need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
Allergic reactions, though not common, do happen, so watch for rashes or hives.

Lotus by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Lotus by Herbal Terra does interact with several medication types, and the interactions we've documented are Moderate in severity.
The main concerns are with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin and clopidogrel), diabetes medications, and the sedative pentobarbital — all of which could have their effects amplified or create new risks when combined with lotus.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Lotus appears to thin the blood slightly through compounds called neferine and isoliensinine, which can inhibit platelet clumping. If you're already on a blood thinner or antiplatelet drug, adding lotus might push bleeding risk higher.
Similarly, animal research shows lotus can lower blood glucose and boost insulin's effect, so if you take diabetes medication, concurrent use could tip you toward low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and may need dose adjustment and close monitoring.
The sedative pentobarbital (Nembutal) is prolonged and deepened by lotus in animal studies, meaning drowsiness could become severe — though we don't know yet whether this translates to humans or affects other sedatives the same way. Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications.
Before starting lotus, run your current medications through the checker on this page or talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) dried plumule liquid extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use of lotus with other antiplatelet drugs might reduce platelet aggregation and increase the risk of bleeding.
Neferine and isoliensinine, constituents of lotus, have been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation, in vitro. These constituents can inhibit the production of pro-aggregating factors like prostaglandins.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, lotus might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research shows that the ethanolic extract of lotus reduces blood glucose levels and potentiates the effects of injected insulin. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, taking lotus concomitantly with pentobarbital might increase sedation.
Animal research shows that lotus extract increases pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. It is not known if this occurs in humans or if this effect occurs with other barbiturates or sedatives.
