Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains two active ingredients: lutein and zeaxanthin, both carotenoids — plant pigments your eye uses to filter light and protect itself. Lutein makes up 20 mg of the dose.
These work together in the eye and are found naturally in leafy greens and other colorful vegetables. The capsule also holds safflower oil, gelatin, glycerin, water, and beeswax as inactive ingredients to form and preserve the softgel.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for slowing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, the two main eye conditions this product targets. It's been studied for several other conditions — retinitis pigmentosa, necrotizing enterocolitis, retinopathy of prematurity, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia — but the evidence suggests it's not effective for those.
Zeaxanthin is also possibly effective for AMD. For age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease, though, the evidence isn't established yet.
We don't have enough reliable data on zeaxanthin for asthma, breast cancer, or bronchopulmonary dysplasia to rate it.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both lutein and zeaxanthin are generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. Lutein doses up to 20 mg daily — the amount in this product — have not caused adverse effects in the studies we hold.
Both ingredients are rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, though the safety data on concentrated supplements (as opposed to food) during breastfeeding hasn't been fully studied. If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product fits your situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (diabetes medications), check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product — zeaxanthin may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar. For all other medication types, no interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're concerned about age-related eye conditions like macular degeneration or cataracts, this product offers two ingredients with some evidence behind them. The main thing to watch is if you take diabetes medication — check with your doctor or pharmacist first, since zeaxanthin might theoretically lower blood sugar.
Overall, it's well tolerated at this dose.

Lutein 20 mg by Kroger Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Kroger's Lutein 20 mg contains lutein and zeaxanthin.
Zeaxanthin has documented interactions with antidiabetes drugs (diabetes medications), where there's a theoretical risk it could increase the chance of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). The concern comes from animal research showing zeaxanthin may lower blood sugar, though population studies of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein haven't found it prevents type 2 diabetes from developing.
Altogether, these interactions span 86 individual medications.

Lutein itself has no known interactions documented in our data. That said, the absence of documented interactions isn't a guarantee none exist — it just means we don't hold interaction data for it.
If you take antidiabetes medication, run your exact drug through the checker below before adding this product, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it's right for you.

Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
