Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains 2 active ingredients: 20 mg of LuteinRich Lutein and zeaxanthin, both carotenoids (plant pigments) concentrated in the eye. They're the yellow-orange compounds naturally found in leafy greens and egg yolks.
The softgel shell itself is made from safflower oil, organic flaxseed oil, yellow beeswax, and non-GMO sunflower lecithin—all inactive ingredients that help deliver the actives.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts—two of the most common vision problems as we age. Zeaxanthin is also possibly effective for AMD.
Both show promise for protecting central vision, though the research isn't definitive enough to call them proven remedies. For other conditions the product mentions—retinitis pigmentosa, necrotizing enterocolitis, retinopathy of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and zeaxanthin for cognitive decline, Alzheimer's, asthma, and breast cancer—the evidence is either insufficient or has shown no real benefit.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
At 20 mg daily, lutein from this product is generally well tolerated with no adverse effects reported in trials. Both lutein and zeaxanthin are considered likely safe in pregnancy and lactation.
That said, most safety data comes from food sources, not concentrated supplements—the caution is that higher supplement doses haven't been as thoroughly studied in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing and want personalized guidance on this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antidiabetes drugs are the main concern: zeaxanthin may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar when paired with diabetes medication. Check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before starting this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Natural Factors Lutein 20 mg is a straightforward two-ingredient eye supplement that may help protect against age-related vision loss. If you take diabetes medications, check your specific drugs against our interaction tool first—zeaxanthin may theoretically lower blood sugar.
For anyone else, it's generally well tolerated, but a quick conversation with your doctor or pharmacist ensures it fits your health picture.

Lutein 20 mg by Natural Factors Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Natural Factors Lutein 20 mg interacts with antidiabetes drugs through its zeaxanthin content.
Zeaxanthin may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined with diabetes medications. Animal studies suggest zeaxanthin has blood sugar-lowering effects, though population studies of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein haven't shown a protective effect against type 2 diabetes development.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Because zeaxanthin's effect on blood sugar control isn't fully understood in humans taking supplements, anyone using antidiabetes medications should check their exact drugs with the search tool on this page before starting this product. Altogether, these interactions span 86 individual medications.
Lutein itself, the product's primary active ingredient, has no known interactions documented in our data. That said, no interactions documented isn't a guarantee none exist—checking your specific medications remains the safest step.

Zeaxanthin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
