Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports eye health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), Asthenopia (eye strain), Cataracts, Central serous retinopathy, Choroideremia, Diabetic retinopathy — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lutein is rated "Possibly Effective" for Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lutein is rated "Possibly Effective" for Cataracts.
  • Also on file: Zeaxanthin is rated "Possibly Effective" for Age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Zeaxanthin is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of vision loss in older adults. The evidence for its use in cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, asthma, breast cancer, and a breathing condition in newborns (bronchopulmonary dysplasia) isn't established well enough to rate.

Lutein is also possibly effective for AMD and for cataracts, but it appears ineffective for retinitis pigmentosa, a rare inherited eye disease, retinopathy of prematurity in infants, necrotizing enterocolitis in newborns, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 2 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 2 of 2.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 2 of 2.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Both ingredients are generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses — lutein specifically has been studied up to 20 mg daily without adverse effects reported. For pregnancy and breastfeeding: the data shows both are likely safe, though concentrated supplements haven't been studied as thoroughly as food sources.

If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether to use this product, since they can weigh your individual situation.

Formula

Lutein is an antioxidant carotenoid found in large concentrations in the eye. Since the body cannot make lutein, it must be obtained from the diet or supplements. Research shows that lutein intake correlates directly to the amount of lutein found in the macula of the eye. Lutein in the macula protects the eye by blocking harmful blue light rays. Studies suggest a link between adequate lutein levels in the body and less risk of eye disease, especially as we age.

Our product contains FloraGLO lutein which is obtained naturally from marigold extract and is a proven, purified source of lutein in the ester-free form. Ester-free lutein may be better absorbed and used by the body compared to the ester form, which requires an extra step to break it down for delivery to cells.

Lutein Vision Health + 20 mg by Harmonia: Common Questions

Does Lutein Vision Health + 20 mg by Harmonia interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Lutein Vision Health + 20 mg has a known interaction with 86 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Lutein Vision Health + 20 mg contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is lutein, and why is it in a vision supplement?
Lutein is a plant pigment (carotenoid) your eye naturally stores, especially in the macula — the part you use for sharp, detailed sight. Both lutein and zeaxanthin in this product are possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss in older adults.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The data rates both ingredients as likely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. That said, concentrated supplements haven't been studied as thoroughly as food sources. If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist — they know your full health picture and can advise you.
Are there any side effects I should know about?
No adverse effects have been reported in our data. Lutein doses up to 20 mg daily have been well tolerated in studies. Both ingredients are generally well tolerated at supplement doses.
Does it work for other eye problems, like cataracts?
Lutein is possibly effective for cataracts. Zeaxanthin's evidence for cataracts isn't rated in our data. For other conditions like retinitis pigmentosa or retinopathy of prematurity, the evidence suggests these ingredients are ineffective.
I take diabetes medication — is this product okay for me?
Zeaxanthin (one of the two actives here) has a documented theoretical interaction with antidiabetes drugs and could increase the risk of low blood sugar. Check your exact medications using the search tool on this page, then talk with your pharmacist before starting.
Does this product have any fillers or additives?
The softgel capsule contains inactive ingredients: sunflower oil, yellow beeswax, soy lecithin, gelatin, glycerin, and purified water. These are common stabilizers and capsule materials.
