Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lycopene 20 mg per softgel capsule. Lycopene is a carotenoid — a plant pigment responsible for the red color in tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit.
The softgel itself is made from gelatin, safflower oil, and vegetable glycerin.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for lycopene is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for prostate cancer, meaning there's some supportive research but more study is needed.
For bladder cancer, diabetes, and high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), the evidence is either too limited or points toward it not working. For Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) and exercise-triggered asthma, there simply isn't enough reliable data yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lycopene from food is considered safe, and supplement doses at this strength are generally well tolerated. The main side effects from supplements are digestive — diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and loss of appetite occur in some people.
During pregnancy and while breastfeeding, lycopene from normal food amounts is fine, but supplement safety hasn't been well studied. If you're pregnant or nursing and interested in taking this, talk with your doctor or pharmacist first about whether it's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take anticoagulant drugs (such as warfarin) or antiplatelet medications (such as aspirin, clopidogrel, or other blood thinners). Lycopene may increase bleeding risk when combined with these drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lycopene 20 mg may be worth considering if you're interested in prostate health support, though the evidence is still building. If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this — the interaction risk is real.
Most people tolerate it well, but digestive upset can happen. Any questions about whether it fits your health goals or medications?
