MacuHealth is a softgel with three active ingredients: lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. These are carotenoids—naturally occurring yellow and orange plant pigments that concentrate in the macula, the part of your eye responsible for central vision.
They're also found in foods like leafy greens and egg yolks. The remaining ingredients are inactive (sunflower oil, gelatin, glycerin, and others) that help deliver and preserve the active compounds.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are also possibly effective for AMD.
For other conditions—like cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, asthma, and cancer—the evidence isn't established in the data we hold. If you're considering this product for AMD or cataract prevention, talk with your eye doctor or pharmacist about whether the evidence fits your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein is generally well tolerated; studies haven't found adverse effects at daily doses up to 20 mg. Both zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses.
Regarding pregnancy and breastfeeding, the data rates all three ingredients as likely safe. That said, the safety notes caution that supplement doses haven't been well studied in pregnancy and breastfeeding, so if you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
