Magna-Dophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Viva Vitamins
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Magna-Dophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Magna-Dophilus contains 2 active ingredients: Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum. Both are live microorganisms (probiotics) that naturally occur in a healthy digestive system and are intended to support gut flora balance.
The capsule also contains two inactive ingredients — rice flour and vegetable cellulose — as filler and capsule material.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these two probiotics varies by condition. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, though it was rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease and the data are insufficient to rate it for acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Bifidobacterium longum, on the other hand, has insufficient evidence for the conditions studied — including age-related cognitive decline, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, and athletic performance. Your results will depend on why you're taking it and your individual circumstances.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are uncommon when taken orally.
Bifidobacterium longum is also generally well tolerated in healthy people, though caution is warranted if you're seriously ill or have a weakened immune system; rare gastrointestinal discomfort, gas, and one reported case of dry cough have been noted. Both ingredients carry a rare but documented risk of bacterial infection (bacteremia or sepsis) in critically ill or very young infants — most cases involved people with serious underlying conditions or recent surgery.
For pregnancy, Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly safe; Bifidobacterium longum is rated possibly safe for both pregnancy and lactation, though limited data exist. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a compromised immune system.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotics, double-check the timing with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product — antibiotics can reduce the probiotic's effectiveness if taken at the same time. No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Magna-Dophilus may help with certain digestive concerns — especially if you're taking or have taken antibiotics — but evidence is stronger for L. acidophilus than for B. longum. The main caution is antibiotics: space them several hours apart from this product so they don't cancel each other out.
If you're seriously ill, immune-compromised, or pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.

Magna-Dophilus by Viva Vitamins Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Magna-Dophilus by Viva Vitamins contains two live probiotic strains — Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum — both of which interact with antibiotic drugs.
Taking either ingredient alongside antibiotics may reduce how well the probiotics work, because antibiotics can kill off a significant number of the live organisms in the preparation. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The concern is straightforward: antibiotics and probiotics are working against each other. If you're on an antibiotic, space out when you take them — your doctor or pharmacist can tell you how many hours apart to take each one so the antibiotic does its job without wiping out the probiotic.
No other medication interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check. Use the medication search tool on this page to confirm your exact prescriptions before you start.

Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium longum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
