Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are uncommon when taken orally.

Bifidobacterium longum is also generally well tolerated in healthy people, though caution is warranted if you're seriously ill or have a weakened immune system; rare gastrointestinal discomfort, gas, and one reported case of dry cough have been noted. Both ingredients carry a rare but documented risk of bacterial infection (bacteremia or sepsis) in critically ill or very young infants — most cases involved people with serious underlying conditions or recent surgery.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
