What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 2 active ingredients.
  • “Mangosteen Blend” is a proprietary blend — the label gives one combined amount (1,200 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

This product contains 2 active ingredients: mangosteen pericarp extract and mangosteen powder. Both are forms of the mangosteen fruit, a tropical plant whose rind (pericarp) and whole powder are used in traditional and supplement medicine.

The product also contains a vegetable capsule as an inactive ingredient.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Mangosteen's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Mangosteen for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Periodontitis — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for mangosteen is mixed. It's possibly effective for periodontitis (gum disease), based on available research.

For androgenic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss), Alzheimer disease, and atopic dermatitis (eczema), there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to rate whether it works. If you're considering this for one of those conditions, talk with your doctor about what the research actually supports for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Mangosteen is generally well tolerated as a food, but the long-term safety of concentrated supplements hasn't been thoroughly studied. People taking mangosteen extract up to 560 mg daily in studies have reported tiredness, headache, dizziness, constipation, nausea, and cough — though it's unclear whether mangosteen caused these or they happened by chance.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: there isn't enough safety information to recommend mangosteen supplements during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Mangosteen.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 125 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, and others), mangosteen may increase your bleeding risk — check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product. If you take donepezil (Aricept) for Alzheimer disease, let your healthcare provider know, as mangosteen might raise its levels in your brain.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Mangosteen may help with gum disease, but the evidence for other uses is unclear. If you take blood thinners or donepezil, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this — the interaction risk is real.

It's generally well tolerated, though some people report digestive or mild neurological side effects. This isn't the kind of supplement to take without looking at your own medication list first.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro and animal research shows that gamma-mangostin, a constituent of mangosteen, is a potent and competitive antagonist of the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor. Antagonism of the 5-HT2A receptor is believed to reduce platelet aggregation.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Donepezil (Aricept)

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with donepezil might increase the effects of donepezil.
Animal research shows that concomitant use of an aqueous extract of mangosteen pericarp with donepezil increases brain concentrations of donepezil at 4 hours by 64% without associated effects on systemic exposure.

Mangosteen by Emerald Labs: Common Questions

Does Mangosteen by Emerald Labs interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Mangosteen has a known interaction with 125 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Mangosteen contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
The data we have doesn't show it's safe in those situations. There isn't enough information either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding — they can give you personalized advice.
What side effects might I see?
Some people taking mangosteen extract reported tiredness, headache, dizziness, constipation, nausea, vomiting, and cough. It's not certain mangosteen caused these, but they've been reported in people taking up to 560 mg daily. Most people don't report problems.
Does it actually work for gum disease?
Possibly. The evidence suggests mangosteen may help with periodontitis (gum disease), though more research would strengthen that claim. For other uses like hair loss or eczema, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet.
What exactly is in this product?
It contains two forms of mangosteen — the pericarp extract (the rind) and mangosteen powder — both made from the tropical mangosteen fruit. It's wrapped in a vegetable capsule.
Is it safe to use long-term?
Mangosteen is generally recognized as safe as a food, but the long-term safety of concentrated supplements like this one hasn't been well studied. If you're thinking of taking it regularly, talk with your pharmacist about what we know.
