Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Mangosteen's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Mangosteen for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Periodontitis — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

Mangosteen has been studied most for periodontitis (gum disease), where the evidence suggests it may be possibly effective. For androgenic alopecia (male-pattern baldness), Alzheimer disease, and atopic dermatitis (eczema), there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to know whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Mangosteen is generally well tolerated as a food, but long-term safety of concentrated supplements hasn't been thoroughly studied. At doses up to 560 mg daily, some people have reported mild tiredness, headache, dizziness, malaise, constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry throat, and flu-like symptoms — though it's unclear whether mangosteen caused these or they happened by chance.

The safety data advises against supplement amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe.

  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 125 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this mangosteen product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs) — mangosteen may increase bleeding risk. Also clear it if you take donepezil (Aricept) for Alzheimer's disease, as mangosteen could raise its levels in your brain.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This liquid mangosteen supplement may help with gum disease, but the evidence for other uses is weak or missing. If you take blood thinners or donepezil, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the interaction risk is worth discussing.

Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should avoid supplement amounts. Talk it over with your own healthcare provider to see if it fits your situation.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro and animal research shows that gamma-mangostin, a constituent of mangosteen, is a potent and competitive antagonist of the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor. Antagonism of the 5-HT2A receptor is believed to reduce platelet aggregation.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Donepezil (Aricept)

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with donepezil might increase the effects of donepezil.
Animal research shows that concomitant use of an aqueous extract of mangosteen pericarp with donepezil increases brain concentrations of donepezil at 4 hours by 64% without associated effects on systemic exposure.
