Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product is pure mangosteen fruit extract — just one active ingredient. Mangosteen is a tropical fruit, and the extract concentrates its compounds.

There are no inactive ingredients listed in the formulation.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Mangosteen's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Mangosteen for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Periodontitis — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

Mangosteen extract appears possibly effective for periodontitis (gum inflammation and infection). For other uses — hair loss (androgenic alopecia), Alzheimer's disease, and eczema — the evidence isn't established well enough for us to rate it.

If you're considering it for one of those conditions, there's not enough reliable data yet to say whether it'll help.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Mangosteen extract is generally well tolerated at doses up to 560 mg daily, though some people in trials reported mild tiredness, headache, dizziness, constipation, nausea, and other gastrointestinal or respiratory symptoms — it's not clear these were caused by the mangosteen itself. Long-term safety of concentrated supplements hasn't been well studied.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so the data advises against using supplement amounts. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.

Moderate interaction found
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Mangosteen.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 125 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, and others) carry a moderate interaction risk — mangosteen may increase bleeding. Also check if you take donepezil (Aricept) for Alzheimer's, as mangosteen may raise its effects.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you have gum disease and want to explore mangosteen extract, it may be worth a discussion with your dentist or doctor. If you take blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, or donepezil, you'll need to check with your own doctor or pharmacist first — the interaction risk is real.

For other purposes, evidence is still thin. Either way, run your medications through the interaction checker before you start.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro and animal research shows that gamma-mangostin, a constituent of mangosteen, is a potent and competitive antagonist of the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor. Antagonism of the 5-HT2A receptor is believed to reduce platelet aggregation.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Donepezil (Aricept)

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with donepezil might increase the effects of donepezil.
Animal research shows that concomitant use of an aqueous extract of mangosteen pericarp with donepezil increases brain concentrations of donepezil at 4 hours by 64% without associated effects on systemic exposure.

Mangosteen Extract by BulkSupplements.com: Common Questions

Does Mangosteen Extract by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Mangosteen Extract has a known interaction with 125 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Mangosteen Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is mangosteen extract actually used for?
Mangosteen extract has possibly effective evidence for periodontitis — that's gum disease with inflammation and infection. For Alzheimer's disease, hair loss, and eczema, there isn't enough reliable research yet to say whether it works.
Can I take this while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data advises against using supplement amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know if it's safe. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your options.
What side effects has mangosteen caused in studies?
At doses up to 560 mg daily, some people reported mild tiredness, headache, dizziness, and various digestive issues like nausea, constipation, or diarrhea — plus occasional respiratory symptoms like cough or nasal congestion. It's unclear whether mangosteen itself caused these, and mild severity is typical of trial reports.
Is this safe to take long-term?
Mangosteen is generally well tolerated as a food, but long-term safety of concentrated supplements hasn't been well studied. If you plan to use it regularly, bring that up with your doctor or pharmacist.
I take warfarin — can I use this?
No — mangosteen may theoretically increase your bleeding risk if you take blood thinners like warfarin. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
