Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?

  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

The capsule itself is filled with gelatin and water as inactive ingredients.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Mangosteen's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Mangosteen for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Periodontitis — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

Mangosteen extract is rated possibly effective for periodontitis (gum infection). For other conditions—androgenic alopecia (pattern hair loss), Alzheimer disease, and atopic dermatitis (eczema)—the evidence isn't established enough in our data to rate whether it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Mangosteen is generally well tolerated as a food, though long-term safety of concentrated supplements hasn't been thoroughly studied. In trials using up to 560 mg daily, some people reported mild tiredness, headache, dizziness, and malaise, as well as digestive symptoms like constipation, nausea, bloating, and diarrhea; it's unclear whether these were caused by mangosteen itself.

Avoid supplement amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding—there isn't enough safety information to know either way.

Before taking this product, check your medications with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, etc.)—mangosteen may increase bleeding risk. Also check if you take donepezil for Alzheimer disease, as mangosteen may raise its effects.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro and animal research shows that gamma-mangostin, a constituent of mangosteen, is a potent and competitive antagonist of the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor. Antagonism of the 5-HT2A receptor is believed to reduce platelet aggregation.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Donepezil (Aricept)

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with donepezil might increase the effects of donepezil.
Animal research shows that concomitant use of an aqueous extract of mangosteen pericarp with donepezil increases brain concentrations of donepezil at 4 hours by 64% without associated effects on systemic exposure.
