Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: marshmallow root extract. Marshmallow root has been used traditionally to soothe mucous membranes in the throat and digestive tract — the plant contains mucilage, a protective, soothing substance.
There are no inactive fillers or other ingredients in this formulation.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for marshmallow root is limited. The data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate its use for vaginal candidiasis (yeast infections), diarrhea, venous leg ulcers (painful sores on the lower legs), atopic dermatitis (eczema), and respiratory tract infections.
While marshmallow has a long history of use, human studies are sparse enough that we can't confidently say whether it works for these purposes.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Marshmallow root extract is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though human safety data are limited — so we don't have a complete picture of long-term effects. The safety data we hold advise against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough reliable information to know it's safe in those situations.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning either, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this supplement.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take lithium — marshmallow may affect how your body processes it and could require a dose adjustment. Anyone on oral medications should take marshmallow 30–60 minutes after their other drugs to avoid absorption problems.
Anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners) are a lower concern, but mention this supplement when discussing your medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Marshmallow root extract is worth considering if you're looking for a traditional throat or digestive soother, but evidence for its effectiveness is sparse. The main medication concern is lithium — if you take it, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Anyone on oral medications should space this supplement out from their drugs. Talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist before adding it to your routine.

Marshmallow Root Extract monograph & interactionsMarshmallow Root Extract by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Marshmallow Root Extract by BulkSupplements.com does interact with a couple of important medication types.
The main concern is with lithium (used for mood disorders). Marshmallow may have mild diuretic effects — meaning it can increase urine output — which theoretically could reduce how your body clears lithium and cause it to build up to unsafe levels.
If you take lithium, your dose may need adjustment.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The other interactions are more modest. Because marshmallow contains mucilage (a thick, slippery substance), it could slow down how your stomach and intestines absorb oral medications — basically any pill or liquid medication you swallow.
To minimize this effect, take marshmallow at least 30–60 minutes after your other oral drugs. Animal research also suggests marshmallow flower may have antiplatelet effects (meaning it could thin the blood slightly), but the root — which is what's in this supplement — is less likely to cause this than the flower would.
Altogether, these interactions span 2,041 individual medications. Use the interaction checker on this page to look up your specific prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Marshmallow Root Extract with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Marshmallow Root Extract
Lithium
Theoretically, due to potential diuretic effects, marshmallow might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Marshmallow is thought to have diuretic properties. To avoid lithium toxicity, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when used with marshmallow.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, marshmallow flower might have antiplatelet effects.
Animal research suggests that marshmallow flower extract has antiplatelet effects. However, the root and leaf of marshmallow, not the flower, are the plant parts most commonly found in dietary supplements. Theoretically, use of marshmallow flower with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs can have additive effects, and might increase the risk for bleeding in some patients.
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, mucilage in marshmallow might impair absorption of oral drugs.
Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
