Here's the gist with marshmallow and your amiloride/hydrochlorothiazide water pill. Marshmallow root is loaded with mucilage, a slippery fiber gel. The concern, which is only theoretical and based on how that gel behaves in the gut, is that it could coat things and slow how much of your pill your body actually absorbs. If that happened, your medicine might work a little less well, meaning blood pressure control or fluid removal could slip.

To be honest, this is a low-level, easy-to-sidestep issue. The simple fix is timing: take your blood pressure pill first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before having marshmallow. There's no need to worry or change your medication on your own. If you use marshmallow regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
