Here's the gist with marshmallow root and your verapamil. Marshmallow is loaded with mucilage, a slippery fiber that swells into a gel in your stomach. The theory is that this gel could coat things and slow down or trap a little of your verapamil before it gets absorbed. Verapamil isn't a prodrug, so the concern would be slightly less drug getting in, which could mean weaker blood pressure or heart rate control.

Honestly, this is a theoretical, minor concern based on how mucilage behaves, not on real-world reports. An easy fix is to take your verapamil first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the marshmallow. If you notice changes in your blood pressure or heartbeat, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Marshmallow root is a traditional herb rich in soothing, gel-like fibers called mucilage, which is why it has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and stomach irritation. Evidence for these uses is mostly traditional and preliminary, but it is generally considered gentle and well-tolerated for short-term use. What Is Verapamil Used For?

Brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, Calan, Covera HS, Verap, Veramil

Verapamil tablets and film-coated tablets are used to treat angina — including vasospastic (Prinzmetal's) angina, unstable angina, and chronic stable angina — as well as certain abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and high blood pressure (essential hypertension). For arrhythmias, regular-release tablets are used alongside digoxin to control heart rate in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of rapid heartbeat.

Extended-release and sustained-release oral forms (tablets and capsules) are indicated specifically for high blood pressure. Verapamil hydrochloride injection is used in hospital settings for rapid conversion of SVT to normal rhythm and for temporary control of fast heart rates in atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
