Epinephrine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Marshmallow interacts with.

Theoretically, mucilage in marshmallow might impair absorption of oral drugs.
Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's some good news: this particular concern really doesn't apply to the epinephrine you'd reach for in an emergency. The interaction on file is about marshmallow's slippery fiber (mucilage) possibly blocking the absorption of pills you swallow. But epinephrine isn't taken by mouth. It's given as an injection (like an EpiPen) or as an inhaled spray, so it never has to be absorbed through your stomach where marshmallow does its thing.

Because the routes don't overlap, marshmallow shouldn't change how well your epinephrine works during an allergic reaction. This is also only a theoretical, lab-based idea, not something proven to cause problems. Still, if you rely on an EpiPen and use marshmallow regularly, it never hurts to mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Marshmallow root is a traditional herb rich in soothing, gel-like fibers called mucilage, which is why it has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and stomach irritation. What Is Epinephrine Injection Used For?

Brand names: Epifrin, EpiPen, Primatene Mist (OTC Epinephrine Inhaler), Anapen, Anapen Junior, EpiPen Jr, Auvi-Q, Symjepi

Epinephrine injection is used for the emergency treatment of anaphylaxis — a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Triggers can include stings from bees, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, and fire ants; bites from insects like mosquitoes; foods; drugs; diagnostic agents; allergen immunotherapy; or exercise. It is also used for anaphylaxis with no identified trigger (idiopathic anaphylaxis).

AUVI-Q (available in 0.3 mg and 0.15 mg strengths) is specifically indicated for patients at increased risk of anaphylaxis, including those with a history of anaphylactic reactions. It is intended for immediate emergency use only — not as a substitute for follow-up medical care.
