HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Maximum L+Z with Astaxanthin by ProCaps Laboratories
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Maximum L+Z with Astaxanthin contains five active ingredients. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids — plant pigments that your eyes use to filter light and protect the retina.
Astaxanthin is another carotenoid with antioxidant properties. Alpha-linolenic acid and stearidonic acid are omega-3 fatty acids.
The capsule itself is made from gelatin, purified water, and glycerin.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for slowing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Zeaxanthin is also possibly effective for AMD.
Astaxanthin's effectiveness for cognitive decline, AMD, skin aging, and other conditions is not established — the evidence we hold on file is insufficient to rate it. Neither ingredient's other listed uses have strong evidence behind them.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein and zeaxanthin are generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses; lutein doses up to 20 mg daily have not caused adverse effects. Astaxanthin is also generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited.
The most common side effects with astaxanthin are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — a small number of trial participants at higher doses reported increased bowel movements or severe stomach pain. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, lutein and zeaxanthin are rated likely safe, but astaxanthin's safety data are not sufficient — the facts advise against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Alpha-linolenic acid and stearidonic acid safety information is not on file.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check any medications your liver metabolizes, especially those broken down by the CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes (astaxanthin may reduce their levels). Also flag any antidiabetes drugs you take, since zeaxanthin may theoretically lower blood sugar further.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is built around lutein and zeaxanthin for eye health, particularly AMD and cataracts, where the evidence is promising. Andrew Lessman's Maximum L+Z with Astaxanthin is an ultra-high potency blend of three powerful protective carotenoids: Lutein, zeaxanthin (L + Z) and astaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the optical pigments essential to the healthy function and protection of the retina and its macular region. Astaxanthin is also highly concentrated in the eye where it imparts its unique functional benefits. Together these three essential ingredients work to protect the most fragile tissues of the eye while also promoting a lifetime of healthy vision. None of these vital protective carotenoids can be produced by the body, so their benefits require a food or supplement source, yet sadly, you will not find any meaningful amount of all three in any typical diet or eye formula. Plus, beyond their well-established role in protecting the eye and promoting healthy vision, lutein, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin levels in the brain have now been associated with healthy brain and cognitive function, particularly as we age. Lutein and zeaxanthin's critical role as optical pigments within the eye promotes visual acuity (sharpness of vision), as well as visual processing speed. Zeaxanthin's exceptionally high concentrations in the central retina affords enhanced protection to its macular region. L + Z can also protect the skin, but it is the brain where recent research has shown an association with superior cognitive function, memory and verbal fluency with age. We also add Ahiflower Oil to enhance the efficacy and benefits of this formula. The body cannot make lutein, zeaxanthin or astaxanthin, and the typical American diet provides so little that supplementation remains the only viable option of ensuring the well-established benefits these critical nutrients provide to our eyes, vision and brain.

Maximum L+Z with Astaxanthin by ProCaps Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Maximum L+Z with Astaxanthin by ProCaps Laboratories does have documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is astaxanthin, which may slow how your liver processes certain drugs. Lab studies show it can speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which breaks down a large number of medications — this is a Moderate-severity effect, meaning the drug levels in your blood could drop and make them less effective.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also theoretically affects another liver enzyme, CYP2B6, in the same way and at Moderate severity. Zeaxanthin (the second active ingredient) carries a Moderate interaction with antidiabetes drugs — it may lower blood sugar further, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), though this is mainly theoretical and based on animal research, not proven in people.
Altogether, these interactions span 740 individual medications.
Alpha-linolenic acid and stearidonic acid we could not check — we hold no interaction data for them. Use the medication checker below to see if any of your exact drugs are affected by the ingredients we did review.

For each ingredient in Maximum L+Z with Astaxanthin with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Omega-3
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Although some clinical evidence suggests that DHA might reduce collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation and thromboxane release, most clinical evidence suggests that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting. However, theoretically, when given in combination with EPA as fish oil, concomitant use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (including aspirin) might increase risk of bleeding.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antidiabetes drugs might reduce the effects of these medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking oral hypoglycemic medications, DHA seems to increase fasting blood glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.
Zeaxanthin Complex
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
