Mega Acidophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Mega Acidophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Mega Acidophilus by Wonder Laboratories
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Mega Acidophilus contains 5 active ingredients—three Lactobacillus species (acidophilus, helveticus, and salivarius), Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, and Citrus Pectin. The first four are live probiotic bacteria meant to support your gut health; Citrus Pectin is a soluble fiber derived from citrus fruit.
The capsules also contain inactive ingredients like vegetable cellulose (the capsule itself), magnesium stearate, vitamin C, and silica.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for what this product does depends on which condition you're thinking about. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, though the data aren't definitive.
Citrus Pectin is possibly effective for high cholesterol. For the other ingredients and conditions listed—like hay fever, cognitive function, or depression—the data we hold show insufficient evidence to rate them.
Talk with your doctor about what you're hoping this supplement will do for you.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though you should check with your doctor before use. Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and diarrhea can occur when combined with other probiotics, but these are uncommon.
There's a rare risk of serious infection (bacteremia, sepsis, abscess, or meningitis) if the bacteria translocate from the gut; most documented cases involved people with underlying conditions. Citrus Pectin is also well tolerated in typical amounts and may cause mild gas, loose stools, or cramps.
Rarely, sensitive individuals may have an allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis. For pregnancy, Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly safe, and Citrus Pectin is likely safe or possibly safe—but the safety data for Lactobacillus helveticus during pregnancy and breastfeeding are not on file, so discuss this product with your doctor before use if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take Mega Acidophilus, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on antibiotic drugs (the bacteria in this product may be killed by them), lovastatin, tetracycline antibiotics, or digoxin. All of these interactions are rated Moderate—meaning the drug's effectiveness could drop.
You'll want to time doses separately from antibiotics if you do decide to use both.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic supplement may help with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, or certain infections, but the evidence is not definitive. If you take antibiotics, lovastatin, tetracycline antibiotics, digoxin, or other heart or cholesterol medications, check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting—this product can interfere with how these drugs work.
It's generally well tolerated, but those with serious illness or weakened immunity should talk with their doctor first.

Mega Acidophilus by Wonder Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Mega Acidophilus by Wonder Laboratories contains ingredients that interact with medications.
The most serious concerns come from Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus helveticus, both of which may reduce antibiotic effectiveness if taken at the same time—the bacteria in these supplements can be killed by antibiotics, which defeats their purpose.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Citrus Pectin in this product may reduce how your body absorbs three important medications: lovastatin (a cholesterol drug), tetracycline antibiotics, and digoxin (a heart medication). If absorption drops, these drugs may become less effective.
All three of these interactions are rated Moderate severity.
We couldn't check Bifidobacterium animalis lactis and Lactobacillus salivarius for interactions—we don't hold interaction data for those two. Altogether, these interactions span 188 individual medications.
Before you start this product, use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your prescriptions are affected.

For each ingredient in Mega Acidophilus with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Lactobacillus helveticus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus helveticus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. helveticus.
Lactobacillus helveticus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. helveticus preparations by at least two hours.
Citrus Pectin
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of digoxin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking digoxin with a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of digoxin by about 62%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, or the combination.
Lovastatin (Mevacor)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of lovastatin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of pectin and lovastatin might reduce the cholesterol-lowering effect of lovastatin, possibly due to reduced intestinal absorption of lovastatin.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, potentially decreasing their effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking tetracycline with bismuth subsalicylate in a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of tetracycline by about 34%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, bismuth subsalicylate, or the combination.
