Lactobacillus Helveticus and Clinafloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Clinafloxacin

Clinafloxacin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Helveticus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus helveticus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. helveticus.
Lactobacillus helveticus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. helveticus preparations by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing a probiotic like Lactobacillus helveticus with an antibiotic such as Clinafloxacin. Clinafloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The problem is that it can't tell the difference between germs causing your infection and the friendly bacteria in your probiotic. So if you swallow them at the same time, the antibiotic may wipe out a good chunk of those live organisms, leaving your probiotic doing little for you.

Good news: this doesn't make the antibiotic less effective or more dangerous, and it isn't harmful. It just wastes the probiotic. A simple fix is spacing them apart by at least two hours. When in doubt, your pharmacist can help you time them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clinafloxacin page

“If you have been prescribed clinafloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic, start with the four interactions rated major, because they all do the same thing: apple, grapefruit, and orange juice, along with activated charcoal, can sharply cut how much of the drug you absorb, and an antibiotic that never reaches your bloodstream cannot clear the…”

About Lactobacillus Helveticus

What is Lactobacillus Helveticus?

  • Mood and stress support
  • Digestive and gut health
  • Sleep support
  • General immune support
  • Blood pressure support

Lactobacillus helveticus is a lactic acid bacterium used as a probiotic, often combined with other strains in mood, gut, and general wellness products. Early research is interesting—especially for stress and mood and for fermented-milk peptides and blood pressure—but evidence is still limited and not conclusive. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a weakened immune system.
