Lactobacillus Helveticus and Vancomycin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Vancomycin

Vancomycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Helveticus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus helveticus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. helveticus.
Lactobacillus helveticus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. helveticus preparations by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction works against the probiotic, not your vancomycin. Vancomycin is an antibiotic, and when you take it by mouth it stays in your gut to kill bacteria there. Trouble is, it can't always tell the difference between unwanted bugs and the friendly Lactobacillus helveticus you swallowed. So taking them at the same time may wipe out a good chunk of the probiotic before it can do much.

Your vancomycin should still work just fine for your colitis. This is a theoretical concern based on how these two behave, not something proven in studies. If you want both, a simple fix is to space them out by at least two hours. Check with your pharmacist or doctor first, since they know your full situation.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Vancomycin page

“Vancomycin (Vancocin) treats serious bacterial infections, and its oral form is a mainstay for C. diff in the gut, so read this list as a genuine safety check, not background noise.”

About Lactobacillus Helveticus

What is Lactobacillus Helveticus?

  • Mood and stress support
  • Digestive and gut health
  • Sleep support
  • General immune support
  • Blood pressure support

Lactobacillus helveticus is a lactic acid bacterium used as a probiotic, often combined with other strains in mood, gut, and general wellness products. Early research is interesting—especially for stress and mood and for fermented-milk peptides and blood pressure—but evidence is still limited and not conclusive. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a weakened immune system.

About Vancomycin

What Is Vancomycin Used For?

Brand names: Vancocin, Vancoled

Vancomycin is used to fight serious bacterial infections caused by certain hard-to-treat bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). When given intravenously (by IV), it treats conditions like septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection), infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and lower respiratory tract infections.

When taken by mouth — as capsules or oral solution (brands include Vancocin and Firvanq) — vancomycin treats Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff) and staphylococcal enterocolitis (a gut infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus). It's important to know that the oral form does not work for bloodstream or other serious infections, and the IV form does not work for C. diff or gut infections — each route has its own specific uses.
