Here's the thing about coffee charcoal: like other charcoal-type products, it has a porous surface that can grab onto things sitting in your gut. If you swallow it around the same time as your oral vancomycin, it could bind some of that antibiotic before your intestines can put it to work, leaving less of it where it needs to be.

That matters because oral vancomycin is meant to act right inside the gut to clear up C. diff colitis. If charcoal soaks up part of the dose, you may not get the full bacteria-killing effect, and your infection could be slower to clear. This is a theory based on how charcoal behaves, not a proven event, but it's easy to sidestep. A simple fix is spacing them apart by at least two hours. Please run the timing past your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Vancomycin

What Is Vancomycin Used For?

Brand names: Vancocin, Vancoled

Vancomycin is used to fight serious bacterial infections caused by certain hard-to-treat bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). When given intravenously (by IV), it treats conditions like septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection), infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and lower respiratory tract infections.

When taken by mouth — as capsules or oral solution (brands include Vancocin and Firvanq) — vancomycin treats Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff) and staphylococcal enterocolitis (a gut infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus). It's important to know that the oral form does not work for bloodstream or other serious infections, and the IV form does not work for C. diff or gut infections — each route has its own specific uses.
