Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's something interesting about pairing coffee charcoal with cholestyramine (Questran): both work in similar ways. Cholestyramine is itself a binder. It grabs onto bile acids in your gut to help lower your cholesterol. Coffee charcoal also has a porous, sponge-like surface that can soak up things in your digestive tract. Put two binders together and they may end up partly canceling each other out or just sitting there absorbing each other.

The practical worry is that taking them too close together could blunt how well your cholesterol medicine does its job. To stay on the safe side, it's smart to space them out by at least two hours. This advice is based on how these products work rather than hard studies, but separating doses is an easy, sensible step. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Cholestyramine page

“Activated charcoal is the single major-rated interaction with cholestyramine (Questran), and it is the one to understand first, because charcoal adsorbs medicines in the gut and can cut how much of an oral drug reaches the body. That major sits at the top of a 19-ingredient list I would treat with genuine care, since almost everything…”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.

About Cholestyramine Resin

What Is Cholestyramine Resin Used For?

Brand name: Questran

  • Cholestyramine is used with diet changes (restriction of cholesterol and fat intake) to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in your blood. Accumulation of cholesterol and fats along the walls of your arteries (a process known as atherosclerosis) decreases blood flow and, therefore, the oxygen supply to your heart, brain, and other parts of your body. Lowering your blood level of cholesterol and fats may help to prevent heart disease, angina (chest pain), strokes, and heart attacks.

  • This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
