Lactobacillus Helveticus and Clarithromycin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Clarithromycin

Clarithromycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Helveticus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus helveticus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. helveticus.
Lactobacillus helveticus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. helveticus preparations by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: clarithromycin (Biaxin) is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that a probiotic like Lactobacillus helveticus is made of live, friendly bacteria. If you swallow them at the same time, the clarithromycin can wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they ever do their work. So this isn't dangerous to you, it just means you may be wasting the probiotic.

The good news is this is easy to manage. Spacing them out by at least two hours usually keeps the probiotic from getting caught in the crossfire. This concern is theoretical, based on how the two work, not on strong studies. Your clarithromycin will still work fine. If you want to keep taking both, just check the timing with your pharmacist or doctor.

  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Lactobacillus Helveticus

What is Lactobacillus Helveticus?

  • Mood and stress support
  • Digestive and gut health
  • Sleep support
  • General immune support
  • Blood pressure support

Lactobacillus helveticus is a lactic acid bacterium used as a probiotic, often combined with other strains in mood, gut, and general wellness products. Early research is interesting—especially for stress and mood and for fermented-milk peptides and blood pressure—but evidence is still limited and not conclusive. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a weakened immune system.

About Clarithromycin

What Is Clarithromycin Used For?

Brand names: Biaxin, Biaxin XL

Clarithromycin tablets and oral suspension treat a range of mild to moderate bacterial infections in adults and children, including community-acquired pneumonia, acute sinus infections, acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, strep throat and tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin infections, and middle ear infections in children. Tablets are also used in adults to eliminate H. pylori bacteria (in combination with other medicines) to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

Clarithromycin tablets — but not the extended-release tablet — are also used to treat and prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in people with advanced HIV. Clarithromycin extended-release tablets are approved only for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, and community-acquired pneumonia in adults — not for the other conditions listed above.
