What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Mega Lactophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Mega Lactophilus by DC
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Mega Lactophilus contains 5 active ingredients: three live Lactobacillus species (acidophilus, salivarius, and helveticus), one Bifidobacterium species (animalis lactis), and citrus pectin. These are probiotics — beneficial bacteria — plus a soluble fiber from citrus.
The product also contains inactive ingredients (cellulose, magnesium stearate, ascorbic acid, and silica) that serve as fillers and binders in the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For the other probiotic species in the blend (salivarius and helveticus), the evidence we hold shows insufficient reliable data to rate them — we don't know yet whether they work for their intended purposes.
Citrus pectin is possibly effective for high cholesterol, but for prediabetes and radiation exposure, there's insufficient evidence to rate it.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Orally, it may cause mild gastrointestinal side effects including gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, though these are uncommon.
Rarely, live Lactobacillus organisms have been linked to serious infections (bacteremia, sepsis, abscess, endocarditis) in certain patients, though most cases appear to occur when bacteria translocate from their normal body location — the risk in healthy people is low. Pectin from food and typical supplement amounts is generally well tolerated; common side effects are diarrhea, gas, and loose stools.
Allergic reactions including anaphylaxis are rare but possible in sensitive individuals. For Lactobacillus helveticus, safety data are limited; people who are seriously ill or immunocompromised should be cautious and check with their doctor first.
Pregnancy and lactation safety data are not on file for most of these ingredients — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Mega Lactophilus, double-check if you take antibiotic drugs (Moderate severity) — they can reduce the probiotic's effectiveness, and timing matters. Also check tetracycline antibiotics, digoxin (Lanoxin), or lovastatin (Mevacor) — pectin in this product may lower how well you absorb them (Moderate severity).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Mega Lactophilus is a multi-strain probiotic with some evidence for digestive and infection-related uses. If you take antibiotics, digoxin, tetracycline, or lovastatin, you'll need to time your doses carefully or skip this product.
If you're seriously ill, immunocompromised, or pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your pharmacist before starting it.

Mega Lactophilus by DC Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Mega Lactophilus by DC contains live probiotic organisms and pectin, and there are documented interactions with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with antibiotic drugs (Moderate severity): the live organisms in Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus helveticus can be killed by antibiotics taken at the same time, which would decrease the probiotic's effectiveness. If you take antibiotics, you'll want to separate the timing of your doses.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Pectin in this product may also reduce how well your body absorbs certain medications. Tetracycline antibiotics, digoxin (a heart medication), and lovastatin (a cholesterol drug) are all affected — pectin can decrease their absorption, potentially lowering their effectiveness.
These are all Moderate-severity interactions.
We were not able to check Lactobacillus salivarius or Bifidobacterium animalis lactis for interactions because we hold no data on those ingredients. Altogether, these interactions span 188 individual medications.
Before you start Mega Lactophilus, use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your prescriptions are listed.

For each ingredient in Mega Lactophilus with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Lactobacillus helveticus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus helveticus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. helveticus.
Lactobacillus helveticus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. helveticus preparations by at least two hours.
Citrus Pectin
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of digoxin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking digoxin with a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of digoxin by about 62%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, or the combination.
Lovastatin (Mevacor)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of lovastatin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of pectin and lovastatin might reduce the cholesterol-lowering effect of lovastatin, possibly due to reduced intestinal absorption of lovastatin.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, potentially decreasing their effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking tetracycline with bismuth subsalicylate in a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of tetracycline by about 34%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, bismuth subsalicylate, or the combination.
