The oral extract is generally well tolerated short-term, though one person in clinical trials reported heartburn. The essential oil, if swallowed, can be toxic — this product is an extract, not the oil itself, but be clear on that distinction.

Topically, bergamot can cause sun-related skin reactions, especially blisters, redness, and dark spots, particularly in fair-skinned people. Bergamot supplements are not recommended during pregnancy because there isn't enough safety data.
