Motherwort Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbs Etc.
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Motherwort against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: fresh Motherwort. The liquid also includes 40% grain alcohol and purified water as inactive ingredients.
The alcohol content is worth noting if you're avoiding alcohol for any reason—it's a significant part of the formulation.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for motherwort is mixed and limited. For bleeding, there's possibly effective evidence.
For anxiety, alcohol use disorder, amenorrhea, and asthma, the evidence is insufficient to rate the ingredient's effectiveness. In short, we don't have strong data backing its use for most of these conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Motherwort appears generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though human safety data are limited overall. The most common side effects from oral use are diarrhea and stomach irritation.
Taking more than 3 grams can cause uterine bleeding. The product should be avoided in pregnancy because motherwort is traditionally thought to stimulate the uterus.
Topical contact with the plant may cause contact dermatitis or sensitivity to sunlight. There is not enough safety information available for breastfeeding, so it's best avoided then too.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications if you take any central nervous system depressants—sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, certain antihistamines, opioid painkillers, or muscle relaxants. Motherwort can boost their sedating effects.
Search your exact drugs in the tool on this page before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're interested in motherwort for bleeding or want to explore it for another use, talk with your pharmacist first—especially if you take any medications that make you drowsy. Avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
The data on safety and effectiveness are limited, so this isn't a first-line choice for most conditions.
