MultiProbiotic Support Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking MultiProbiotic Support against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Partial disclosure
MultiProbiotic Support contains seven active ingredients: vitamin K, Lactobacillus acidophilus (a probiotic bacteria), beta 1,3 glucan (a fiber derived from yeast or mushrooms), carnitine, Bifidus (a probiotic bacteria), Bifidobacterium (another probiotic strain), and propolis (a resinous mixture made by bees). The inactive ingredients include cellulose, gelatin, FOS (a prebiotic fiber), vegetable stearate, and silica.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for this product's ingredients varies. Vitamin K is effective for conditions tied to clotting factor deficiency and possibly effective for osteoporosis.
Beta-glucan is likely effective for high cholesterol and heart disease. L-carnitine is effective for carnitine deficiency and possibly effective for high cholesterol, heart failure, and chest pain.
The probiotic strains—Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium—are possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. Propolis is possibly effective for mouth sores and cold sores.
We hold no effectiveness data for Bifidus.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taken orally, vitamin K is generally well tolerated at dietary amounts but may cause mild stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea; it is likely safe in pregnancy and lactation. L. acidophilus and beta-glucan are generally well tolerated in healthy people, though minor digestive side effects like bloating or abdominal discomfort can occur.
L-carnitine commonly causes nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and sometimes a fishy body odor at high doses; seizures are rare. Propolis is generally well tolerated short-term but can cause headache (about 7% of trial participants at higher doses) and, rarely, severe allergic reactions in people sensitive to bee products; it is best avoided during pregnancy, and data on breastfeeding are limited.
We hold no pregnancy or lactation data for beta-glucan or Bifidus.

MultiProbiotic Support by The Professional Series Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
MultiProbiotic Support by The Professional Series contains seven ingredients, and through its vitamin K, Lactobacillus acidophilus, beta 1,3 glucan, propolis, and L-carnitine content, it does interact with medications.
The most serious interaction is Major: vitamin K can reverse the blood-thinning effects of warfarin (Coumadin), potentially reducing your protection against blood clots.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Moderate interactions exist with antibiotic drugs (L. acidophilus may be killed if taken simultaneously, reducing the probiotic's effectiveness), blood pressure medications and immune-suppressing drugs (both through beta-glucan), multiple drug-metabolizing pathways in your liver through propolis (CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP3A4, and CYP2E1 substrates), blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (propolis may increase bleeding risk), and thyroid hormone replacement or the anticoagulant acenocoumarol (L-carnitine may interfere with both). Propolis also theoretically may decrease warfarin effectiveness.
We could not check Bifidus and Bifidobacterium — we hold no data for these ingredients. Before you start this product, run your exact medications through the search tool on this page, and if you take any blood thinner, thyroid hormone, antibiotic, or blood pressure medication, check with your own doctor or pharmacist first.

For each ingredient in MultiProbiotic Support with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Propolis
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, propolis might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that propolis water extract and the propolis constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, can inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, evidence from an animal model shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases INR, suggesting that propolis can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP1A2. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP1A2 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP1A2 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C19. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C19 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C19 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C9. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C9 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C9 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2D6. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2D6 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2D6 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, propolis might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1.
In vitro research shows that propolis can inhibit CYP2E1. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, propolis might decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
Animal research shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases the international normalized ratio (INR). This effect has not been reported in humans.
Beta 1,3 Glucan
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking beta-glucans with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical research shows that taking beta-glucans may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in some hypertensive individuals.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, beta-glucans might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Some clinical research shows that beta-glucans have immunostimulant effects.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Carnitine
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.
Vitamin K
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Vitamin K can antagonize and reverse the therapeutic effects of warfarin.
Vitamin K antagonizes the effects of warfarin. Excessive vitamin K intake, either from supplements or from changes in the diet, can reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
