Ocuvite Blue Light contains two active ingredients: lutein and zeaxanthin. Both are carotenoids — plant pigments your eye naturally absorbs and stores in the macula (the central part of your retina that controls sharp vision).
The softgel capsule also contains inactive ingredients including soybean oil, gelatin, glycerin, sunflower oil, beeswax, soy lecithin, tocopherols, and colorants.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, but the evidence for retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, necrotizing enterocolitis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia is insufficient — it's been rated possibly ineffective for those conditions. Zeaxanthin is possibly effective for AMD as well.
For other uses listed in our data — age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, asthma, breast cancer, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia — the evidence isn't established.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein from food and typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated, with doses up to 20 mg daily showing no adverse effects in trials. Zeaxanthin is also generally well tolerated at typical supplement amounts.
Both ingredients are rated Likely Safe in pregnancy and lactation. However, the safety of concentrated supplement doses (rather than dietary amounts) during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well studied, so check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
