What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: spirulina (also called blue-green algae), at 1 gram per serving. There are no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Spirulina shows possibly effective evidence for high blood pressure (hypertension). For acne, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), iron deficiency anemia, and arsenic poisoning, the evidence we hold is insufficient to say whether it works or doesn't.
If you're considering it for one of those conditions, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current research shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, spirulina is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, flatulence, and nausea — plus dizziness, fatigue, and headache.
Allergic reactions, including rashes, itching, and in rare cases anaphylaxis, have been reported. A bigger concern is product quality: spirulina supplements vary in purity, and some have been contaminated with toxins or heavy metals.
The safety data available are limited, and contamination risk is real — this is why extra caution is warranted when choosing a brand.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with us if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin), drugs that suppress your immune system, or diabetes medications — spirulina may increase bleeding risk, interfere with immune control, or lower your blood sugar. Altogether, these interactions span 322 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Spirulina may help with high blood pressure, but the evidence for other uses isn't established yet. If you take blood thinners, immune suppressors, or diabetes drugs, you'll want to check with us first — there's a documented risk.
Before you buy, know that quality varies; contamination is a genuine concern with this product type.

Organic Spirulina 1 g Unflavored by Nutricost Organic Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Nutricost Organic Spirulina interacts with three medication types we've documented.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (Major severity) — spirulina can theoretically increase bleeding risk, though this is thought to be unlikely in practice. A small number of people taking spirulina 2.3 grams daily reported mild gum bleeding and bruising.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Spirulina may also interfere with drugs that suppress your immune system (Moderate severity), since blue-green algae can stimulate immune activity. Additionally, if you take diabetes medications, spirulina might increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) (Moderate severity) — human studies show spirulina can lower blood sugar in people with diabetes.
One more thing: quality and contamination vary significantly between products. Some spirulina supplements have tested positive for toxins or heavy metals, so sourcing matters.

For each ingredient in Organic Spirulina 1 g Unflavored with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Spirulina
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, spirulina blue-green algae might increase the risk of bleeding if used with other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, this is unlikely.
Spirulina blue-green algae have shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in vitro. However, one preliminary study in 24 patients receiving spirulina blue-green algae 2.3 grams daily for 2 weeks showed no effect on platelet activation or measures of clotting time.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking blue-green algae with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Human research shows that spirulina blue-green algae can have hypoglycemic effects in patients with diabetes, at least some of whom were using antidiabetes drugs. However, blue-green algae does not seem to improve glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in patients with diabetes. A meta-analysis of animal studies also suggests that spirulina blue-green algae have hypoglycemic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of blue-green algae might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Blue-green algae have been shown to stimulate the immune system.
