What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: certified organic spirulina and astaxanthin. Spirulina is a blue-green algae rich in protein and nutrients; astaxanthin is a red carotenoid pigment from algae and other marine sources.
There are no inactive ingredients listed for this tablet.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For spirulina, the evidence supports that it's possibly effective for high blood pressure (hypertension). For acne, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), iron deficiency anemia, and arsenic poisoning, the evidence is currently insufficient to rate its effectiveness.
For astaxanthin, evidence is insufficient to rate its effectiveness for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (dry eyes), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other conditions in our data. Neither ingredient has established effectiveness for most uses they're marketed for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Spirulina is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though a small number of people report abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, headache, fatigue, dizziness, flatulence, or vomiting. Rare allergic reactions—including rashes, itching, and in one case anaphylaxis—have been reported.
A few cases of mild gum bleeding or bruising occurred in people taking 2.3 grams daily. Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated, with the most common side effects being abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stool; a higher dose caused severe stomach pain in a small number of trial participants.
An important caution: spirulina quality varies widely and some products can be contaminated with toxins or heavy metals. The safety data for astaxanthin during pregnancy and breastfeeding are not sufficient—the facts advise against use in both situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're on anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners or aspirin), immunosuppressants, antidiabetes medications, or drugs metabolized by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6. Altogether, these interactions span 932 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may appeal to people interested in nutritional support from spirulina and astaxanthin, but effectiveness for most marketed uses isn't well established in current evidence. If you take blood thinners, immunosuppressants, diabetes medications, or drugs processed through liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Quality and contamination are real concerns with spirulina products. Talk it over with your healthcare provider to see if it's right for you.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson's Organic Spirulina & Astaxanthin interacts with medications through both its spirulina and astaxanthin content.
The most serious concern is a Moderate-severity risk of bleeding with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin) from spirulina; though unlikely in practice, spirulina has shown antiplatelet effects in the lab.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Spirulina also carries Moderate-severity risks with immunosuppressants (used after transplant or for autoimmune conditions), since it stimulates the immune system and could interfere with these drugs' effects. Additionally, spirulina may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you're taking antidiabetes drugs, because research shows spirulina itself can lower blood sugar.
Astaxanthin poses Moderate-severity theoretical risks with drugs metabolized by two liver enzymes: CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 substrates. Lab studies suggest astaxanthin may speed up how your liver clears these drugs, potentially lowering their levels—though this hasn't been confirmed in humans yet.

For each ingredient in Organic Spirulina & Astaxanthin with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Certified organic Spirulina
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, spirulina blue-green algae might increase the risk of bleeding if used with other anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. However, this is unlikely.
Spirulina blue-green algae have shown antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects in vitro. However, one preliminary study in 24 patients receiving spirulina blue-green algae 2.3 grams daily for 2 weeks showed no effect on platelet activation or measures of clotting time.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking blue-green algae with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Human research shows that spirulina blue-green algae can have hypoglycemic effects in patients with diabetes, at least some of whom were using antidiabetes drugs. However, blue-green algae does not seem to improve glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in patients with diabetes. A meta-analysis of animal studies also suggests that spirulina blue-green algae have hypoglycemic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, concurrent use of blue-green algae might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Blue-green algae have been shown to stimulate the immune system.
