HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Organic Tulsi / Holy Basil by Herbadiet
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: holy basil (also called tulsi), a traditional herb used in Ayurvedic medicine. The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose, an inert casing that holds the herb.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for holy basil is not yet established in our data. Clinical studies haven't yielded reliable evidence to rate it for generalized anxiety, asthma, headache, respiratory infections, dental plaque, or diabetes — so we can't say whether it works for any of these uses based on what's available.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil extract is generally well tolerated short-term in adults, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are loose stools and nausea; in one clinical trial, two out of 24 people taking holy basil capsules experienced one of these.
Safety in pregnancy and lactation has not been established and animal data raise concerns, so the data advise against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), diabetes medications, or pentobarbital or other sedatives. No interactions are documented for other sedative or barbiturate medications in our data, but that doesn't mean none could occur.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're interested in holy basil as a traditional herbal supplement and don't take blood thinners, diabetes medication, or sedatives, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first — especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any prescription drugs. Long-term safety data are thin, so short-term use is what we know most about.

Organic Tulsi / Holy Basil by Herbadiet Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbadiet's Organic Tulsi / Holy Basil interacts with blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs), diabetes medications, and the sedative pentobarbital.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners: holy basil seed oil may increase bleeding risk. Animal studies show it can slow blood clotting, but we don't yet know if this happens in people taking it by mouth as a capsule.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Diabetes drugs present a second moderate concern. Small clinical trials show that holy basil can lower fasting blood sugar, so combining it with diabetes medication might push your glucose too low (hypoglycemia).
Pentobarbital, a sedative barbiturate, may have its drowsy effects amplified by holy basil seed oil in animal models, though human data are limited.
We could not fully assess whether other sedatives or barbiturates (beyond pentobarbital) interact with this product, as the data focus on one specific drug. Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications.
Before you start, run your exact medications through the search tool below or discuss this supplement with your doctor or pharmacist — especially if you take any blood thinner, diabetes medication, or sedative.
