Pau D'Arco Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Pau D'Arco against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pau D'Arco by Eclectic Herb
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pau d'arco inner bark extract, dried. Pau d'arco is a tropical tree bark traditionally used for various purposes, though modern evidence for most of those uses is limited.
The liquid is made with alcohol and filtered water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence doesn't support pau d'arco for cancer, peptic ulcers, wound healing, or dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain). In all four cases, the data we hold rates effectiveness as insufficient—meaning either no solid studies exist, the studies are too small or poorly designed, or results don't consistently show a benefit.
If you're considering pau d'arco for any of these conditions, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about what the science actually backs.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pau d'arco is generally well tolerated at typical doses, but human safety data is limited and side effects can occur at higher doses. If you take more than 1.5 grams daily of its main active ingredient (lapachol), you may experience anemia (low red blood cells), increased bleeding risk, severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
The safety data advises against using pau d'arco during pregnancy due to possible harm to the developing baby, and there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if either applies to you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before using pau d'arco if you take any blood thinner or antiplatelet medication (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or similar drugs). The interaction is rated Moderate and relates to increased bleeding risk, especially at higher doses.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pau d'arco may be worth exploring if you're interested in traditional herbal use, but evidence for its effectiveness is thin. If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, you'll want to check this with your pharmacist before starting.
Skip it during pregnancy, and get personalized advice on breastfeeding from your doctor.

Pau D'Arco by Eclectic Herb Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pau D'Arco by Eclectic Herb is a single-ingredient liquid extract with one documented interaction category.
The ingredient, pau d'arco inner bark extract, may increase bleeding risk when taken alongside blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin, warfarin, or clopidogrel). In lab studies, pau d'arco reduces how well blood cells clump together and may interfere with vitamin K, which helps blood clot.
One clinical study found that high doses of its active constituent (lapachol) above 1.5 grams daily raised bleeding risk further.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although we have interaction data for pau d'arco's main active compounds, the exact dose in this liquid extract isn't specified on the product facts, so it's unclear whether you're getting enough lapachol to trigger these effects. That said, if you take any blood thinner or antiplatelet medication, check your exact drugs with the search tool on this page before starting pau d'arco.
Altogether, these interactions span 122 individual medications.
