What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains one active ingredient: phosphatidylserine 100 mg per capsule. Phosphatidylserine is a naturally occurring compound found in cell membranes, particularly in the brain, and it's thought to support brain function by influencing cell communication.
The capsule itself is made from gelatin, glycerin, caramel color, and titanium dioxide — the inactive ingredients that form and color the softgel.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Phosphatidylserine is possibly effective for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease based on the evidence we have on file. For athletic performance, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), general cognitive function, and dementia, the evidence we hold is insufficient — we can't yet say whether it works for those uses.
If you're considering it for a specific reason, talk it over with your doctor to see what the current evidence supports for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Phosphatidylserine is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety hasn't been fully established. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are flatulence, gastrointestinal upset, headache, insomnia, and nausea — gastrointestinal problems can show up at doses of 200–300 mg per day, and insomnia is more likely at higher doses (around 600 mg).
There isn't enough safety data to recommend this supplement during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking GNC Phosphatidyl Serine, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take anticholinergic drugs (like antihistamines, certain bladder medications, or some antispasmodics) — phosphatidylserine might reduce their effectiveness. Also confirm any cholinergic medications (like certain dementia or myasthenia gravis treatments), as this supplement could add to their effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Phosphatidyl Serine may help with age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease based on available evidence. If you take anticholinergic or cholinergic medications, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement — it could affect how those drugs work.
It's generally well tolerated, but gastrointestinal side effects and insomnia are possible. Talk it over with your healthcare provider to make sure it fits your situation.
