Pine bark extract shows possibly effective evidence for osteoarthritis and chronic venous insufficiency (a condition where veins have trouble returning blood from your legs). For asthma, the evidence is also rated possibly effective.

Pine bark extract is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety hasn't been fully established. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal complaints — like stomach upset — along with dizziness and vertigo.
Headache has been reported in a single trial. One case of chest pain and one case of heart failure worsening were reported, but both patients had prior heart disease, so it's unclear whether the extract was directly responsible.
