HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Policosanol 20 mg by Source Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Source Naturals Policosanol 20 mg contains one active ingredient: policosanol, a waxy substance extracted from plant sources. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, and silica — which serve as binders and fillers to hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Policosanol is likely effective for intermittent claudication (pain or weakness in the legs caused by narrowed blood vessels). For other uses listed in research — coronary heart disease and familial hypercholesterolemia (inherited high cholesterol) — the evidence isn't established well enough in the data we hold to rate it.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Policosanol is generally well tolerated in studies, though real-world benefit is uncertain and quality varies between products. The most common side effects are uncommon — a small number of trial participants experienced headache, dizziness, drowsiness, irritability, insomnia, upset stomach, skin rash, or weight loss.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin, beta-blockers, blood pressure medications including propranolol or nitroprusside, or diabetes drugs. All carry Moderate interaction risk with policosanol.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with leg pain from poor circulation, but it interacts with blood thinners, diabetes drugs, and several blood pressure medications. If you take any prescription medication — especially warfarin, beta-blockers, or diabetes drugs — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting policosanol.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are best avoided with this product.

Formula
Policosanol 20 mg
Source Naturals POLCOSANOL, part of the Cholesterol Rescue family of products, is a blend of compounds isolated from natural plant waxes. Policosanol contains several long chain fatty alcohols, including octacosanol, hexacosanol and triacontanol. Animal and in vitro research has shown that these compounds may support the cardiovascular system and inhibit lipid peroxidation as well as support macrophage activity.

Policosanol 20 mg by Source Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Source Naturals Policosanol 20 mg interacts with several medication types through its single active ingredient.
The most serious concerns involve blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs — policosanol may increase bleeding and bruising risk when combined with them, and there's a specific Moderate concern with warfarin (Coumadin).
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Beta-blockers and the blood pressure medication propranolol (Inderal) carry Moderate risk of additive blood pressure-lowering effects, which could lower your blood pressure too much. Diabetes medications (antidiabetes drugs) also have a Moderate interaction — policosanol may lower blood sugar further, raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Nitroprusside (Nitropress), another blood pressure drug, similarly poses a Moderate risk of excessive blood pressure drop.
Although policosanol has been checked and carries these documented interactions, no interactions are documented in our data for the inactive ingredients in this product. Altogether, these interactions span 242 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Policosanol 20 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Policosanol
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking policosanol with other antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
Some clinical research shows that taking policosanol 10-50 mg daily for 7-15 days can inhibit platelet aggregation in healthy patients. Although, one clinical trial shows that taking policosanol 10 mg twice daily for 2 weeks prior to warfarin dosing does not affect warfarin pharmacokinetics or warfarin response. Furthermore, a study in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with a drug-eluting stent found that taking policosanol 40 mg plus clopidogrel and aspirin daily for 30 days modestly reduced the risk for minor bleeding events when compared with taking clopidogrel and aspirin alone. Until more is known, use with caution.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, policosanol might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research shows that policosanol can lower blood glucose levels.
Beta-Blockers
Concomitant use of policosanol with beta-blockers can cause additive blood pressure-lowering effects.
Clinical research shows that policosanol 5 mg daily can have additive blood pressure-lowering effects in patients with hypertension who are taking beta-blockers. Also, animal research shows that policosanol can increase the blood-pressure lowering effects of propranolol.
Nitroprusside (Nitropress)
Theoretically, concomitant use of policosanol with nitroprusside might cause additive blood pressure-lowering effects.
Animal research shows that taking policosanol along with nitroprusside can increase the blood pressure-lowering effects of nitroprusside.
Propranolol (Inderal)
Animal research shows that taking policosanol along with propranolol can increase the blood pressure-lowering effects of propranolol.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, taking policosanol with warfarin might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
Some clinical research shows that taking policosanol 10-50 mg daily for 7-15 days can inhibit platelet aggregation in healthy patients. However, one clinical trial shows that taking policosanol 10 mg twice daily for 2 weeks prior to warfarin dosing does not affect warfarin pharmacokinetics or warfarin response.
