HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pancreatin 8X 500 mg by Source Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Pancreatin 8X contains five active ingredients: sodium, amylase, protease, lipase, and pancreatin. The first three are digestive enzymes — amylase breaks down carbohydrates, protease breaks down proteins, and lipase breaks down fats.
Pancreatin is a pancreatic extract that works similarly. Together they're meant to help your body digest food when your own digestive enzymes aren't doing enough of the job.
The capsule also holds inactive ingredients including gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silica.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The sodium in this product is likely effective for cystic fibrosis and possibly effective for preventing kidney damage from amphotericin B (a strong antifungal drug). For the enzymes themselves — amylase, protease, lipase, and pancreatin — we hold no effectiveness ratings in our data.
The protease and lipase monographs show insufficient evidence to rate their use for inflammatory bowel disease and indigestion. If you're taking this for a specific digestive condition, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether the evidence supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is generally well tolerated at normal dietary amounts, but this product adds to your total sodium intake. Too much sodium is linked to high blood pressure and heart strain, and the safety data warns against sodium supplements or very high intake without medical advice.
The enzymes in this product — protease and lipase — are generally well tolerated in adults, though protease may rarely cause digestive upset or allergic reactions. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: the sodium in this product is possibly unsafe in pregnancy, and safety data for protease and lipase during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited; talk with your doctor before taking this if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're on lithium, blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), corticosteroids, didanosine, sodium phosphate bowel cleansers, tolvaptan, or any other medication that contains sodium. The sodium in this product can either reduce how well these drugs work or raise your blood sodium to unsafe levels.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pancreatin 8X is a digestive enzyme blend designed for people whose own pancreas isn't making enough enzymes to break down food properly. If you take lithium, blood pressure drugs, corticosteroids, or any other sodium-related medication, you need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the sodium content can interfere with how these drugs work.
The same goes if you're pregnant, nursing, or have heart, kidney, or blood pressure concerns. Ask your healthcare provider whether this product makes sense for you.

Formula
Digestive enzymes
Pancreatin is a mixture of pancreatic enzymes that support digestion. Porcine pancreatin, which is similar to human, consists of proteases (to breakdown protein), amylases (to breakdown carbohydrates) and lipases (to breakdown fats). Together they aid the body's natural digestion process and may improve nutrient absorption. When taken between meals they act as systemic enzymes providing soothing comfort to the body. Pancreatin 8X contains eight times the enzyme activity as pancreatin USP.

For each ingredient in Pancreatin 8X 500 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
