HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Prostate SR by Theralogix
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Prostate SR contains 2 active ingredients: saw palmetto CO2 extract and a phytosterol blend. Saw palmetto is a plant extract traditionally used for urinary and prostate concerns.
Phytosterols are plant compounds with a similar structure to cholesterol. The softgel also holds inactive ingredients — extra virgin olive oil, gelatin, glycerin, yellow beeswax, purified water, soy lecithin, and carob extract — that give the capsule its form and help deliver the actives.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on saw palmetto is mixed. For a specific urinary procedure (transurethral resection of the prostate, or TURP), it's rated possibly effective.
However, for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — the most common prostate concern — the data suggests it's possibly ineffective. For hair loss, chronic bronchitis, and other lower urinary tract symptoms, we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate it.
We hold no effectiveness data for the phytosterol blend in this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Saw palmetto is generally well tolerated, and side effects are mild and uncommon. The most frequently reported ones are abdominal pain, constipation, decreased libido, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, rhinitis, and vomiting.
Rarely, skin reactions and heart rhythm changes have been reported. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to possible hormone effects and lack of safety information.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Prostate SR, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin) — saw palmetto may increase bleeding risk. Also double-check if you use estrogens or contraceptive medications, as the product might reduce their effectiveness.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Prostate SR is worth considering if you're exploring saw palmetto for urinary symptoms, but the evidence for benign prostatic hyperplasia specifically is weak. It's important to check your medications first — especially blood thinners, birth control, and hormonal drugs.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, avoid this product. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for your situation.
