What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains a single active ingredient: phosphatidylserine, a natural fat-like compound found in cell membranes. The capsule itself is made from gelatin, glycerin, purified water, and non-GMO sunflower lecithin—all inactive ingredients that help deliver the phosphatidylserine.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Phosphatidylserine is possibly effective for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease, based on the evidence we have on file. For athletic performance, ADHD, general cognitive function, and dementia, the evidence isn't strong enough yet to say whether it works.
Talk with your doctor about whether it might make sense for your specific situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Phosphatidylserine is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety isn't fully established. The most common side effects are flatulence, gastrointestinal upset, headache, insomnia, and nausea—and insomnia is more likely at higher doses (around 600 mg).
Gastrointestinal upset can show up at doses of 200–300 mg per day. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check any anticholinergic drugs (used for overactive bladder, Parkinson's disease, or urinary symptoms) or cholinergic drugs (used for myasthenia gravis or Alzheimer's disease) with your doctor or pharmacist. Phosphatidylserine may reduce the effectiveness of anticholinergic medications or add to the effects of cholinergic ones.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement may help with age-related memory changes or early Alzheimer's disease if you and your doctor think it's a fit for you. If you take anticholinergic or cholinergic medications, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first—this product could interfere with how those drugs work.
Most people tolerate it well, though some experience mild stomach upset or headache. Run it by your own healthcare provider before you start.
