Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This lozenge has 2 active ingredients: vitamin B12 and L-5-MTHF (a form of folate). B12 supports energy, nerve function, and red blood cell formation.
Folate (also called vitamin B9) is essential for DNA synthesis and cell division. The rest — xylitol, mannitol, natural flavors, cellulose, and a few other compounds — are inactive ingredients that give the lozenge its form and taste.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Vitamin B12 in this product is effective for treating B12 deficiency and Imerslund-Grasbeck disease (a rare condition affecting B12 absorption), and it's likely effective for cyanide poisoning. It's possibly effective for canker sores and postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles).
We don't have effectiveness data on file for L-5-MTHF in this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
B12 is generally very well tolerated and has no established upper limit because your body clears excess in urine. Oral B12 can rarely cause allergic reactions like rash or hives — in theory, people with a cobalt allergy might react to the cobalt in the B12 molecule, though this is uncommon.
B12 is needed and considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding at recommended amounts; follow your provider's guidance. We don't have safety data on file for L-5-MTHF.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Before starting PureMelt B12 Folate, double-check if you take metformin (Glucophage) or any other medications with the search tool on this page — that's the one we know about. We couldn't verify L-5-MTHF against drug interactions, so your pharmacist should review your full medication list to be thorough.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is a straightforward B12 and folate supplement — good if you're low in either vitamin or taking metformin long-term (which can deplete B12). If you take any prescription medications, especially diabetes drugs, check them against our interaction tool first.
A quick conversation with your pharmacist will make sure it's right for you.
