Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Pycnogenol, a standardized extract from maritime pine bark. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients — cellulose, stearic acid, silica, and magnesium stearate — which are fillers and binders that help form and deliver the supplement.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence supports Pycnogenol for a couple of uses. It's possibly effective for osteoarthritis and for chronic venous insufficiency (a condition where leg veins don't pump blood back to your heart as well as they should).
For high cholesterol, though, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective — so don't count on it for that.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pycnogenol is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety hasn't been fully nailed down. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal complaints, dizziness, and vertigo.
Headache has been reported in a trial, and there's one report of chest pain and one of heart failure worsening in patients taking the extract — though in both cases the patients had existing heart disease, and it's unclear if the extract was the cause. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this supplement is right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check your medications against these drug types: blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (Moderate risk of increased bleeding), immunosuppressants (Moderate risk of reduced effectiveness), and diabetes drugs (Moderate risk of low blood sugar). Use the search tool on this page to verify your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pycnogenol may help with osteoarthritis or chronic venous insufficiency if the evidence resonates with you. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medication, or immune-suppressing drugs, check with your pharmacist first — this supplement could affect how they work.
And because long-term safety isn't fully known, it's worth a conversation with your healthcare provider about whether it fits your situation.

Pycnogenol 100 mg by Country Life Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pycnogenol 100 mg by Country Life contains maritime pine bark extract, which does interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, clopidogrel, or aspirin). The extract may inhibit platelet aggregation, which could raise your bleeding risk — though we don't yet know how big this effect is in real patients.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to check if you take immune-suppressing medications or diabetes drugs. The extract has shown immunostimulant activity in lab and animal studies, which could theoretically interfere with immunosuppressants, though this hasn't been seen in people yet.
And one clinical trial found that maritime pine bark extract can lower blood sugar, so if you're on diabetes medication, close monitoring and possible dose adjustments may be needed.
Altogether, these interactions span 322 individual medications. Run your exact medications through the checker below before you start.
